Picture of the Week, 11/8/10
Birth of an island.
All it takes is a sandbar and a sprouting coconut and in a short time, geologically speaking, a new island will come to life. Of course you must add current, tide and wind with a dose of sunlight as your principal ingredients, and leave the bulldozers and condos for much later, for it to all work.

A mysterious woman is awash by the oncoming waves.
A few days earlier I was photographing the movement of water along the tidal line. The light was of the sky’s reflection at dusk and the combination of water and camera movement created surreal effects.

Sometimes the worth of an image is how it makes the viewer feel. I hope this one makes everyone feel a little happier or at least bring a smile to your faces.
Little else needs to be said about this week’s PoW.

Picture of the Week, 9/13/10: “Shapes Designs”, the Al Merrick decal says it all.
One other quick note about this image that those who like photographing may be interested in: I had not visualized or thought about taking an image like this when Loreal, the model, and I set off one morning to photograph. My plan was to make photographs of Loreal paddling a surfboard showing an above/below water perspective.

This week’s PoW was taken last week while Hurricane Earl brushed the US East Coast leaving in its wake little destruction but plenty of good, quality surf.
I had been surfing for two solid days and by the end of the second day began to feel guilty that I hadn’t taken a single photograph. When my arms would not paddle anymore I finally grab a camera and took a few shots as the swell began to subside.
I love the composition, symmetry and sense of location this image has and the touch of color provided by the two background ships. Still, the main focus remains on the surfer who is small in the frame but prominent in being the central figure in the photograph, both in action and in subject matter. The only thing missing from this image is sunlight, which unfortunately I had little control over the switch.

One view of two distinct worlds; one above water and the other below the water. In one there is a lady paddling a surfboard and in the other there is a second lady casually swimming underneath the first. Both women are stylish in their posture, confident in their concentration and each one effortlessly propels herself through the water.
