I captured this image while working for Smithsonian Institution. My assignment was to photograph wilderness areas of Florida, Georgia, Alabama and South Carolina for a guide book to the natural areas of those states.

Picture of the Week, 9/13/10: “Shapes Designs”, the Al Merrick decal says it all. One other quick note about this image that those who like photographing may be interested in: I had not visualized or thought about taking an image like this when Loreal, the model, and I set off one morning to photograph. My plan was to make photographs of Loreal paddling a surfboard showing an above/below water perspective.

The colorful hulls of fishing boats reflecting on water. The photograph was made in the southern port of Ancud, Chile. It was a calm day allowing the water to act as a mirror. A bit of wave action was all that was needed to swirl the boat and sky reflections into abstract color patterns. I love how something so simple can actually appear complex and dare I say psychedelic! Strong composition, balance and symmetry plus a bit of drama adds to the allure of this image that was recently made on the North Island of New Zealand. In addition the calmness and reflection of the water helps to soothe the otherwise dramatic elements (weather, dominant graphics, bright light) in the picture. Technical details: Body: Nikon D300 Lens: Nikkor 12-24mm f/4 G lens with focal length set at 12mm was used Shutter speed: 1/400 sec. Aperture: f/10 ISO: 200 Metering: Matrix
