Media coverage of surfboards

My boards were on public display for the first time and I could not have selected a more appropriate venue than the annual Surf Expo. Held every January at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Florida the Surf Expo is where the surf industry gathers to display the latest in surf and beach apparel, surfboards, stand up paddleboards, skateboards, art, accessories and more items than you can imagine coming from the ocean and the youth culture.

Ricky Carroll of R&D Surf Inc. provided floor space at his booth that included surfboards from five shapers. Using custom made steel stands the boards were showcased to a large crowd of buyers and industry insiders. People took noticed as well as snap shots of the boards and overall I was pleased with the compliments and well wishes that I received. And because of that I am motivated to continue with the goal of mounting a 15 Boards 15 Shapers exhibition. The desire is to have the exhibition include not only the boards but black & white framed portraits of the shapers, framed full-frame photographs of the images used on the boards and a multimedia show of the work it took to make the boards.

Coverage was provided by ESM (Eastern Surf Magazine) and can be seen on their web site http://www.easternsurf.com/feature_011311_SurfExpoB/

Snowboarders at Mount Cardrona, New Zealand

For nearly nine months I have selected and written about an existing image of mine on a weekly basis. For me it’s been fun reminiscing on both old and new images. I never knew until Monday morning (sometimes Tuesday depending on my Sundays!) what would inspire me in my selection and writing. I did though want to make it interesting and inspirational to the viewer.

marathon runners

Palm Beach Marathon, lead runners

This past weekend the 7th annual Palm Beach Marathon was held. I did not run in it nor did I photographed it. However in years past I have taken photos of it including this one of the lead pack.

I used a Hasselblad X-Pan camera which, for those unfamiliar with it, is an older film camera made to shoot panoramic images. I loved that camera and I’m real sorry I sold it a while back when the photography world was turning digital.

surfing a large wave
Pipeline Perfection.

The perfect wave, the perfect position and the perfect day, it all adds up to the ultimate surfing experience: Getting barreled at Pipeline on the North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii.

The fortunate surfer is Takayuki Wakita from Japan. At this moment he is experiencing an incredible rush of adrenalin of which very few surfers, let alone non-surfers, have ever experienced. Lives of surfers have been claimed by the five foot reef that lies underneath Takayuki making this ride and all others at Pipeline a truly death defying act.

Athletes are judged on levels of performance. In the case of a surfer surfing Pipeline he or she is also judged on a level of commitment, style and grace under moments of intense energy and danger that few other athletes are subjected to.

I salute Takayuki and the countless other surfers that have placed themselves in this perilous situation and have performed at the highest level. I also salute those surfers that have been seriously injured or paid the ultimate sacrifice in challenging themselves at ‘Pipe’.

Aloha.
