One on one with your subject, nothing but the camera in between. There’s definitely some nervousness between the two, doesn’t matter if you known the person for years or have just met them. Both want to look good, one visually one creatively. As the photographer I’m supposed to be directing but I’m not always sure that’s how it goes. I sometime feel the person’s demeanor directs how and what I see, though it’s also my job take control when possible. Either way it’s a process down a two way street and a good portrait can tell so much about those on either side of the camera.
