Witches Rock and Santa Rosa National Park, Costa Rica
Witches Rock, Costa Rica

Witches Rock in the Santa Rosa National Park, Costa Rica. This is a seldom seen view of the famous surfing landmark. It was taken half way down the trail head that begins on the Pan American Highway. Most surfers travel by boat and thus are not afforded this scaled back view of the rock.

If one does wish to arrive by land and not sea it is doable but at an expense. First of all it will take two to three times longer, even if given a 30 km head start. Secondly a heavy duty four wheal drive vehicle outfitted with a winch and steel cable is mandatory. The drive down the park is unimaginably rough and there is no assurance that you will make it down or back up even with the best of equipment. Lastly you will need to spend at least one night at the park’s rustic campground when traveling overland.

There are other discomforts to content with when coming by land. Mosquitoes, wild animals such as large cats and snakes, a beach with no shade and a two mile walk from the campground to Witches Rock where the waves break best are on the short list. However there is a strong connection to be made with the park and the rock that those who comfortably arrive by boat will not experience. Like anything in life, you get what you pay for.
